Impressive ROAS — Making Google Ads Work for Martial Arts Gear
Client
The client is a leading provider of affordable, high-quality martial arts gear, specializing in equipment for Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ), MMA, boxing and more. From BJJ gis, fight shorts and rashguards to gym bags and boxing gloves, its products are built for fighters who demand top performance.
Challenge
The client had struggled to see success with Google Ads despite several previous attempts. They were unsure whether the platform could effectively reach their niche audience of martial arts practitioners while staying within a tight budget. They needed a way to increase sales without overextending advertising costs or wasting budget on irrelevant clicks.
Approach
We developed a comprehensive strategy centered on feed-only Performance Max (PMax) campaigns, using Google's AI-driven technology alongside creative targeting and disciplined budget management to reach the right audience, maximize ROAS and scale efficiently.
- Feed-only Performance Max with budget efficiency. We started with one feed-only Asset Group per product category, prioritizing Google Shopping — the top-performing conversion network — to gather quality data on purchase-ready audiences, with Dynamic Remarketing serving returning visitors. Once each group built a strong conversion base, we introduced additional assets to reach Search, Display, YouTube and Discovery.
- Granular product-category bidding. Instead of a blanket approach, we segmented products into distinct categories — BJJ gis, MMA gloves, Muay Thai gear — each with custom bid strategies, allocating higher bids to historically higher-converting categories and lower bids to less popular items. This maximized sales of top sellers while giving niche products exposure without overspending.
- Hyper-localized targeting for martial arts communities. Geo-targeting focused on locations known for martial arts communities, schools and events, ensuring ads reached users most likely to be actively training in BJJ, MMA or boxing — minimizing wasted budget and lifting conversion rates.
- Seasonal adjustments for tournament seasons. Seasonal bid adjustments capitalized on demand spikes during BJJ and MMA tournament seasons, timing ads to major events so sales climbed when practitioners were preparing to compete.
- Long-tail keywords via Dynamic Search Ads (DSA). DSAs captured highly specific queries like "IBJJF-approved BJJ gis" and "best rashguards for MMA training," surfacing ads for niche searches competitors often miss and reaching buyers further along the journey.
- Audience layering with interest and intent segments. We combined interest-based targeting (combat sports, martial arts) with custom intent audiences ("buy BJJ gear", "MMA training gloves"), integrated Customer Match for previous visitors and buyers, and expanded to lookalike audiences — serving ads to the highest-intent users.
Results
With feed-only PMax campaigns, advanced audience targeting, geographic segmentation and dynamic optimization, the client saw a significant improvement in Google Ads performance. They connected with their target audience — martial artists, BJJ practitioners and MMA fighters — while keeping tight control of budget. The campaigns drove higher sales and achieved an impressive ROAS through efficiency and precise targeting, making Google Ads a key pillar of their marketing and a cost-effective engine for long-term growth.
