Sweet Success — Google Ads for a US Online Confectionery Retailer
Client
The client is a US online confectionery retailer offering a wide range of sweets and seasonal candy — a highly visual, impulse-driven category with sharp demand peaks around major holidays.
Challenge
Running Google Ads for an online confectionery store presents several unique challenges. Seasonality and demand fluctuations play a major role, with sales peaking during Halloween, Christmas and Valentine's Day — requiring adaptive budget management and campaign adjustments to capitalize on those windows. High competition, with major brands and retailers wielding larger budgets, demands strategic targeting and bidding to stand out. The relatively low average order value (AOV) makes precise cost control and ad-spend efficiency essential to remain profitable while scaling. Because candy is a highly visual category, high-quality imagery and compelling creative are crucial to attract customers. And with impulse buying a significant factor, remarketing and persuasive ad copy are vital to capture spontaneous purchases.
Approach
By applying a comprehensive, data-driven strategy, we scaled the client's campaigns while protecting profitability. Here's what we did.
- Performance Max with product-specific feed-only Asset Groups. We launched PMax campaigns with separate Asset Groups per candy category (chocolates, gummies, holiday-themed candies). We began feed-only to focus on Google Shopping and Dynamic Remarketing — the highest-ROAS channels — giving Google's bidding algorithm the most accurate data. Once Asset Groups generated enough conversions, we expanded with headlines, descriptions and images across Search, Display, YouTube and Discovery, and later introduced video to further engage audiences and improve conversion.
- Smart Bidding strategies. We implemented automated strategies like Target ROAS and Maximize Conversion Value so Google's AI could optimize bids in real time, applying seasonal bid adjustments to align with peak demand periods.
- Audience segmentation & first-party data utilization. Using first-party data, we built highly targeted audience lists from past purchases, cart abandonments and engagement behavior, and used Customer Match to re-engage previous customers with special offers and seasonal promotions.
- Negative keyword optimization. We continuously refined our negative keyword list to prevent irrelevant traffic and keep budget on high-intent searches.
- Localized campaigns for bulk orders. Recognizing demand for bulk candy orders for events, we ran geo-targeted campaigns focused on areas with high event-venue density.
- Mobile and desktop ad segmentation. We split ads into separate ad groups for mobile and desktop, optimizing headlines and descriptions for each platform's display capabilities — ensuring a professional appearance and clear communication across devices.
Results
By applying these strategies, the client achieved significant improvements in Google Ads performance. Our work increased campaign scalability without compromising ROAS, letting the company expand its reach while staying profitable. Precise targeting and remarketing improved conversion rates, effectively capturing and converting potential customers. Our approach also fostered higher customer retention and repeat purchases, strengthening long-term relationships — and by optimizing ad-spend allocation, we maximized profitability during peak seasons, keeping marketing both cost-effective and impactful.
